Homebirth Midwifery Care
I offer global out-of-hospital midwifery care to low-risk pregnant people in the greater Pittsburgh area who are planning to give birth at home.
Appointments are 60-minutes long, during which we will take vitals, check in on you and baby, provide nutritional and lifestyle counseling, and have plenty of time for your questions and concerns. Prenatal appointments are typically done in our home office, located in zip code 15120. Delmar will see you in your home at 36 weeks, the birth, and your first two postpartum visits (24-48hours and 1 week). You will return to our office for your 2-week, 4-week and 6-week appointments.
When you go into labor, you will call Delmar on our dedicated on-call line. Together, you will decide when it makes sense for Delmar to join you in your home. The midwife will bring 1 trained and qualified assistant (and perhaps a student, with your consent). The birth team will periodically assess your progress, check your vitals, and listen to baby’s heart rate with a handheld doppler throughout your labor. We may also make suggestions for positions, movement, and nutrition/hydration throughout the process. After the baby is born, we will stay about 4 hours to assess your wellbeing, get you started chest/breastfeeding, complete a newborn exam, and help you and baby transition smoothly.
We wish we could guarantee everyone a complication-free pregnancy and birth without hospital transfers, but that is not reality. Midwives receive intensive training in identifying normal and variations of normal. Delmar's expertise lies in the ability to recognize when a situation has left the realm of normal, so that we can access the resources of the hospital in a timely manner. This doesn’t mean that sudden complications do not occasionally occur. The midwife and assistants are trained, experienced, and certified in managing complications until we can reach the hospital, if needed. We are all certified in CPR for Healthcare Providers as well as Neonatal Resuscitation. Enrolling for midwifery care and planning for a homebirth is not a guarantee of where your birth will ultimately happen.
